: Alaskan Railroad (18); These train photos were taken as a passenger on the AK RR traveling from Anchorage to Fairbanks, Alaska. There are few if any other places you can photograph trains, bald eagles, moose, glaciers, grizzly bears and Mt. McKinley all in a four hour train ride.

: American Freedom Train (2); The American Freedom Train was a 26-car train led by one of three enormous steam engines restored for the American Bicentennial celebration.

: Amtrak (4); A new chapter in railroad history began when the National Railroad Passenger Corporation (AMTRAK) began operating the nation's passenger railroads on May 1, 1971.

: B&O Railroad (3); The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad (B&O) was one of the oldest railroads in the United States, with an original line from the port of Baltimore, Maryland, west to the Ohio River at Wheeling and Parkersburg, West Virginia.

: C&O Railway (1); The Chesapeake and Ohio Railway (C&O) was a Class I railroad formed in 1869 in Virginia from many smaller railroads begun in the 19th century.

: Cass Scenic Railroad (15); The Cass Scenic Railroad consists of the former company town of Cass, eleven miles of railway, and a portion of the summit of Bald Knob, highest point on Back Allegheny Mountain.

: Hawaiian Sugar Cane Train (6); Today, Hawaii's original railroads have almost disappeared entirely. The Lahaina Kaanapali & Pacific Railroad, also known as the "Sugar Cane Train" is an authentic reproduction of the train that once ran through West Maui.

: Norfolk & Western (66); The Norfolk and Western Railway was formed by more than 200 railroad mergers between 1838 and 1982. The company was famous for manufacturing steam locomotives in-house at the Roanoke Shops as well as their own hopper cars.

: Pennsylvania Railroad (1); The Pennsylvania Railroad was an American railroad, founded in 1846. Commonly referred to as the "Pennsy", the PRR was headquartered in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

: South Shore Railroad (1); Hauled freight and passengers between east Chicago and northwest Indiana through the 1950's.

: Southern Railway (86); The Southern Railway was the product of nearly 150 predecessor lines that were combined, reorganized and recombined beginning in the 1830s, formally becoming the Southern Railway in 1894.

: Strasburg Railroad (23); The Strasburg Rail Road, located near Strasburg, Pennsylvania, in the United States, is a steam locomotive-powered tourist railroad in the heart of Pennsylvania Dutch Country, dating back to 1832.

: Thomas the Tank Engine (16); Thomas the Tank Engine has been delighting children for decades. Today you can join Thomas the Tank Engine, a full-sized operating steam locomotive, at the Strasburg Railroad.

: Virginia Railway Express (6); The Virginia Railway Express (VRE) is a commuter rail service that connects the Northern Virginia area with Washington, DC. The VRE operates on two lines, the Fredericksburg line, and the Manassas line.

: Western Maryland (1); The Western Maryland Railway was an American railroad which operated in Maryland, West Virginia and Pennsylvania. Much of the original Western Maryland line has been abandoned including the crossing of the Allegheny Mountains.
